Healthy eating habits and physical activity are key to losing weight and staying healthy. Unfortunately, the image of regular exercise often leads us to believe we’re headed for boot camp rather than the gym. If you are unable to do rigorous exercise due to injury or other circumstances, you should not give up. Alternatives do exist.

If you watch any of the television shows featuring overweight people competing to lose weight, you may well believe that weight loss requires an intense exercise regime that is nigh impossible to maintain. The people competing in these shows have the time to exercise as much as they are told to, the commitment to push themselves - particularly as people are watching them on TV - and the show’s producers know that pushing contestants to the limit is more interesting to viewers.

Slowly getting into low impact exercise without the stress and strain of intense exercise not only helps you lose weight gradually, it is better for you. You’ll keep the weight off easier as your body adjusts to the exercise, and you can increase the intensity when you feel ready for it.

Take a Walk

Walking uses almost every muscle in your body, and is an excellent way to get into shape. You don’t need any specialized equipment or have to pay gym fees - all you need is a good, comfortable pair of sneakers.

There is nothing nicer than walk in good weather. Whether you wander round the neighborhood or head to the local park or beach, take advantage of the sunshine. Try to get a friend or neighbor to walk with you. Company makes the walk go much quicker, and you won’t realize the distance you’re covering the same way you would on your own. If the weather is inclement, head to the mall - not to shop - but to walk. Any large space will do, and if you can add in a few stairs, all the better.

At first glance, yoga may not look like much of a workout. It is, however, an excellent, low impact form of exercise that can get surprisingly intense as you progress. Buy a DVD to practice at home, or join a local class.

Keep Track of Your Food Intake

Exercise alone will not help you lose weight, and unless you watch what you eat, you may end up putting on weight. Stick to healthy foods and minimize the sugary, fatty foods. You don’t have to forgo your favorite cookies, just learn to eat one every now and then, not a bag a day. Watch your portions, and don’t eat when you’re not hungry.
