These fad diets advocate a particular technique (such as eliminating a specific food, or consuming just particular combinations of foods) in conjunction with the fundamental concept that the body makes up the difference in energy by breaking down and utilizing some part of itself, in effect converting fat into energy. This self-cannibalism, or catabolism as it is called, usually begins with the breakdown of stored body fat.
